Hiroshima - Well known for its destruction by the atomic bomb in 1945, Hiroshima has since been dubbed “City of Peace”. Places of interest include Hiroshima Castle, the Peace Memorial Park, the Atomic Bomb Dome and of course Miyajima Island, near the city famous for its vermilion gate in the tidal waters of the bay in front of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine.

Itsukushima Shinto Shrine

Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (a World Heritage site) is a splendid structure of vermillion-lacquered corridors with the sacred Mount Misen as a backdrop. Said to have been founded in 593, the building's current appearance was established in 1168. At full tide the structure seems to be floating on the sea, a unique and highly attractive feature. The torii gate standing majestically in the bay in front of the shrine, which was traditionally approached by boat, is one of Japan's most famous sights.
