| The World Heritage Sites |
| In 1994, the Cultural Properties of the Ancient capital of Kyoto were registered as a United Nations-designated World Heritage site as one group consisting of 17 shrines, temples and castles in Kyoto and Shiga prefectures. It was the first time in the world that such a large number of scattered cultural heritage sites had been registered at the same time, and bears witness to the enormous accumulation of traditional culture concentrated in the Kyoto area. The designated properties include the Shinto shrines Kamigamo Jinja and Shimogamo Jinja, the Buddhist temples Kinkakuji, Ginkakuji, Toji, Kiyomizudera, Daigoji, Ninnaji, Kozanji, Ryoanji, Tenryuji, Saihoji and Nishi-Honganji, and Nijo Castle in Kyoto City; Ujigami Shrine and Byodoin Temple in Uji City; and Enryokuji Temple in Otsu City. The architectural styles of the buildings span a wide range, representing almost every era of Kyoto's history as the Imperial capital (794-1868). The most ancient building, Kamigamo Shrine, actually predates Kyoto's ascendancy as the capital and is mentioned in Japan's oldest official history, the Nihon Shoki (compiled from 680 to 720), while Nijo Castle dates from the seventeenth century. |
| Gion Area - KYOTO |
For many people it is the Gion district that comes to mind when they think of Kyoto. The area developed round the precincts of the Yasaka Jinja Shrine, and is considered the most prestigious entertainment district in Japan. Wooden beams in a grid pattern create a lacework that is in perfect harmony with the elegant maiko (apprentice geisha) dancers that can be seen making their way to a sophisticated dining and dancing engagement on the streets of Gion. The streets of Gion boast traditional restaurants and shops selling age-old crafts such as kanzashi ornamental hairpins, incense and kimono accessories. |
