Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is better known in Japan as Shirasagi-jo, or the White Heron Castle, because its gracefully curved roofs and brilliantly white walls make it redolent of a white heron in flight. It is a national treasure and was registered as a United Nations World Heritage site, together with Horyuji Temple in Nara, in 1993. This was the first such registration involving Japanese sites.
Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple is one of Kyoto’s best-known temples. The balcony of the Main Hall commands a fine view of the city. Leaving Kiyomizu Temple, you can wander down Kiyomizu-zaka, a cobbled street lined with souvenir and antique shops. Wander along the meandering inclines of the street and visit shops selling local ceramics, ceramic dolls and all kinds of traditional products.
