Day 1

 
Takamatsu
 
Upon arrival at Takamatsu station and checking into your hotel will conduct a thorough orientation with an English-speaking staff to prepare you for the journey. Depart by local train from Takamatsu Chikko station to Katamoto station. Proceed to the 84th temple, Yashima Temple, by walking to the top of the 282 meter lava plateau. You can enjoy unrestricting views of the stunning Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi Bridge, found between mainland Honshu and the island of Shikoku, from a top Mt. Yashima. Walk towards the Higashiyama gate takes you towards Yakuri cable station where you ascend up to the entrance of Yakuri Temple #85. Walk down towards Yakuri station and a local train ride from Yakuri station to Takamatsu Chikko station will have you arriving just in time for a nice relaxing evening.

Day 2B

 
Takamatsu – Kotohira
 
A morning taxi ride to temple #82 Negoro Temple will be followed by a two-hour long hike to temple #81 Shiromine Temple using the scenic mountain trail. Here you can enjoy a lush green setting in spring and the red maple leaves during autumn. One way of enjoying the hike is to find the 14 mark stones that the pilgrims of past used to guide them along the forest – most definitely worth checking out! You can also enjoy the trees and flowers found all around you. A pilgrimage route where you can be one with nature and the past. Proceed to temple #75 Zentsuuji Temple by taxi. After visiting and offering your prayers to the Zentsuuji main temple, walk towards JR Zenstuuji station. Ride local train to Kotohira station. And from there proceed to Kotohira Onsen for a relaxing and much-deserved hot spring bath.

Day 3BL

 
Kotohira – Takamatsu
 
After breakfast, a morning climbing up the 785 steps of the famous Nakasendo stairway will lead you to the main Konpira-Gu Shrine. Enjoy the traditional souvenir shops and food stalls along the way. Once finish with the shrine visit, proceed back down the steps to Nakano Udon School for an authentic udon noodle-making experience! (instruction with gestures) Dine on your freshly-made udon noodles for lunch. A walk back to Kotohira station to catch a return local train to Takamatsu from where your pilgrim ends and your journey home begins.

Before and/or after the walking

Takamatsu is a ferry hub for the islands of the Inland Sea. Naoshima is known as an art island which is just about an hour by ferry. Shodoshima is also about an hour by ferry which is called the Mediterranean of Japan and has beautiful scenic spots, such as "Angel Road", where a sand bar appears at low tide, and "Kankakei Gorge", which is considered one of the most spectacular gorges in Japan.
Teshima is one of the islands where the Setouchi Triennale international art festival takes place. It’s a homey place a bit larger than Naoshima, combining unspoiled nature and country lifestyles.

Day 2BD

 
Takamatsu
 
Depart by train from Takamatsu for Katamoto station. Walking to the top of the 282 meter lava plateau, you will visit Yashima Temple (#84) and enjoy commanding views of the Seto Inland Sea and the Seto Ohashi Bridge. A walk down from the East gate takes you towards Yakuri cable station where you ascend up to the entrance of Yakuri Temple (#85). Upon returning to the valley floor you can enjoy a relaxing walk along coastal towns to Shido temple (#86), your final destination for the day. A train ride back from Shido station to Takamatsu will have you arriving back at your hotel just in time for dinner.

Day 3BD

 
Takamatsu
 
Travelling by rail from Takamatsu to Nagao where you will board a taxi for the ‘Pilgrim Koryu Salon’ where you can view informational materials and learn about the pilgrimage. You then embark on the 4 hour hike along the Nyotai mountain trail to Okubo Temple (#88). Take a local bus back down to Nagao station then catch a return train to Takamatsu.
Walking distance: 7.1km / Elevation gain: 400m / Time required: About 9.5 hours

Day 4BD

 
Takamatsu – Matsuyama
 
After an express train from Takamatsu to Niyugawa station you will taxi up to the Tosan-guchi starting point and embark on a 2 hour hike traversing the mountain path to Yokomine Temple (#60). A bus and taxi get you back to Niyugawa station and a relaxing ride to the city of Matsuyama. Travel to Dogo where you will soothe those sore muscles in the world famous Dogo hot springs before retiring for the night.

Day 5B

 
Dogo – Matsuyama
 
A return to Matsuyama city via electric tramway from where you will embark on your journey home.

  • 3.   Vegetarian meals are not available on this tour.
  • 4.   This tour visits a wide range of areas in Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. In Hokkaido
    and Aomori the temperature may drop below 0°C even in the daytime, and snowfall may be heavy. In contrast,
    the high temperature in Okinawa may be around 20°C. With a maximum temperature difference of about 30°C,
    participants on this tour will need to bring the appropriate clothing and items for the climate at each
    destination.
  • 5.   [Day 2 / For tour departing on Jan. 29 only] The tour will join the Gokayama
    Illumination Tour, which is a 1-day tour operated by JTB, and other international and Japanese customers
    will also be on board.
  • 6.   [Day 6] As drift ice is a natural phenomenon, in some cases drift ice may not be seen
    after the ship departs, but no refunds will be issued even if participants do not get to see drift ice.
  • 7.   [Day 9] Hirosaki Castle will be viewed from the outside only. Participants cannot enter
    the castle keep.
  • 8.   [Day 10] Suitcases and other large-size luggage will be sent from Hotel Nikko Fukuoka to
    Hotel JAL City Naha. Luggage pick-up will be on Day 12, so please pack a backpack or similar small bag for 2
    days for your personal belongings on Day 11 and Day 12. (Luggage shipping for 1 piece of luggage per
    participant is included in the tour booking charge. Charges must be paid on site for any additional
    luggage.)
  • 9.   [Day 11 & Day 12 / For tours departing on Jan. 29 & Feb. 1 only] The visit to
    Nago Park may be changed to Ryukyumura depending on the blooming conditions of the cherry blossoms. No
    refunds will be issued in such cases.
  • 10. [Day 14] For the Mt. Fuji & Hakone Tour, this tour will join a tour operated by JTB for
    international travelers, and the interpreter guide that accompanied the tour through Day 13 will change to a
    different guide.
  • 11. Rooms for each hotel on this plan must be 1 room for 2 guests. Room types cannot be selected.
  • 12. Children younger than 6 years old are not permitted to participate.
  • 13. This tour is accompanied by an English-speaking interpreter guide for the entire itinerary, except
    for free time sections of the tour. Note that in some cases, all sections of the itinerary may not be led by
    the same interpreter guide. In such cases, there is a possibility that certain transfers via airplane, etc.
    may not be accompanied by an interpreter guide.
  • 14. Depending on the number of participants and the destinations, a different type of vehicle such as a
    large taxi or minibus may be used.
  • 15. Seating requests for transportation are not accepted.
  • 16. If the minimum number of participants (2) is not met by 20 days before the scheduled date, the tour
    on that date may be cancelled.
